The Gear

My gear bag is always the largest and heaviest around.  As a climber, sportsman and photographer, I have to lug two sets of kit everywhere.  My workplace is usually half way up a cliff or tree, and I’m often hanging from ropes in uncomfortable positions, spinning like a top!  I often find it difficult (or impossible) to get into exactly the right position; where I need to be to capture my images.  As a climbing, outdoors photographer, I have to be a rope-access technician, climber, field IT expert and creative photographer all at the same time.  It a hassle and I frequently get strange looks when I take out my camera halfway up a 200m climb.  But, in the end, it’s worth it.

I've now been building up my gear for some time.  I've had to reach a compromise between weight, cost and performance.  I find that the Canon EOS system with Sigma lenses best fits this compromise, while still providing top quality images.  It’s neither lightweight nor cheap, but it’s pretty much bomb-proof and intuitive, and delivers in all but the most extreme conditions.  If I fail to get the shot that I envisaged, it’s usually down to my own error or the 80mph blizzard raging around me!
I shoot all images in digital RAW.  This gives me the greatest flexibility to get the pictures I want, and be able to download, tag, post process and release images quickly while getting the most out of the camera’s capture.
